Media pemadam api HFC-227ea diciptakan sebagai pengganti alat pemadam api berupa gas Halon 1301 yang sudah tidak diijinkan lagi untuk digunakan karena tidak ramah terhadap lingkungan dan berpotensi merusak lapisan ozon.

Nama lain dari unsur senyawa kimia HFC-227ea adalah 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane atau biasa disebut heptafluoropropane. Formulasi kimia dari media pemadam kebakaran HFC-227ea adalah CF3-CHF-CF3, atau C3HF7.
